Bluff is a small town located in the San Juan River Valley in the southeastern corner of Utah. This San Juan County town provides a wealth of scenic views: fertile farmland to the east, panoramic landscapes to the west, and 300 foot sand stone bluffs to the north providing an amazing Utah backdrop for the town. From Bluff a visitor has easy access to Monument Valley, Valley of the Gods, Natural Bridges National Monument, Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, and Hovenweep, Cedar Mesa, Mesa Verde and various other Archaeologic sites.
Settled in the late 1880's, the community remains small and welcoming. The Bluff City Historic Loop is a favorite walking tour for visitors, and a short drive to the hilltop cemetery provides valley views. Part of the Navajo Reservation borders Bluff, resulting in a blending of the native Navajo culture and Bluff town life. Dance performances, rodeos, horse races, and other get-togethers are common town activities.
Bluff also provides a chance for white water rafting on the San Juan River. From ancient times many cultures have left their mark and told their stories on the painted walls along the San Juan corridor. In addition, this river is known for the steepest gradient in North America! A fast moving Utah river without technical whitewater, it is a challenging trip with opportunities to view layers of geological formations and to visit fascinating rock art and ruins on short hikes along the way.
