Springdale is a small southwestern Utah town known as the Gateway to the Zion National Park. Archeological evidence shows that the area was first settled by Native Americans, with occupation dates ranging from before 500 A.D. through 1200 A.D., when the Anasazi abruptly abandoned the area. By the late 1700's early Europeans, and various trappers and traders found Indian presence, but little record remains. The current community was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1862.

Since Springdale is located immediately outside the boundaries of the National Park, it provides a base camp for exploring Zion. For many, the main highlight of Zion is the trip through Zion Canyon to the Temple of Sinawava. Several stops along the way allow viewing or hiking access to numerous features found in the park. For the more adventurous, hiking in the Narrows of the Virgin River is not to be missed. Zion is known for the spectacular, colorful sandstone cliffs soaring into the Utah sky above a flat-bottomed forest valley floor.

There are also over 150 miles of maintained trails which lace the roadless interior of the park, allowing visitors the opportunity to explore the Utah back-country. Guided horseback riding trips, nature walks, and evening programs are available from late March to early November. Springdale is a year-round destination resort with a variety of outdoor activities: hiking, swimming, tennis, and rentals available for bicycling, tubing, hiking and horseback-riding.

In the midst of a natural rural setting a visitor can enjoy many cultural activities, entertainment and nightlife. Visitors enjoy a giant-screen Cinemax movie, a 2,000-seat outdoor amphitheater, a museum, art galleries, bookstores, a playhouse, family concerts, festivals, and restaurants of all sorts.
