Moab is a city in Grand County of eastern Utah that hosts a large number of tourists every year. Most visitors come to Moab to the Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, which are located close by.  Arches National Park is a showcase of over 2,000 natural sandstone arches, like the world-famous Delicate Arch, as well as many other unusual rock formations.  Canyonlands preserves a beautiful landscape eroded into countless canyons, mesas and buttes by the Colorado River and its tributaries. The forces of nature have exposed millions of years of geologic history, providing extraordinary features creating a landscape of contrasting colors, landforms and textures that is unlike any other in the world. Rivers divide the park into separate areas: the Island in the Sky, the Needles, and the Maze. While these areas share a primitive desert atmosphere, each retains its own characteristics and offers a different opportunity for exploration.

Native American sites also abound with petroglyphs (images pecked into rock), and pictographs (images painted on rock) preserved right in town as well as in nearby areas. Prehistoric Fremont and Anazasi Indians once lived in the canyon bottoms, leaving evidence of their life and culture in rock art, granaries, and dwellings.  By the time the first white men arrived in the early 1800s, they had been replaced by nomadic tribes, who continued to attack the groups trying to settle the area. By 1870 other settlers had been more successful and Moab was established.  Farming and ranching were the main activities until oil and uranium exploration took over in the mid-1900s.

The town is also a popular base for mountain bikers who come to ride the nearby Slickrock Trail, and off-roaders who come for the annual Moab Jeep Safari. River rafting on the Green and Colorado attracts numerous visitors.
