Midway is a city in the picturesque Heber Valley of Wasatch County, Utah. Popular local legend states that there were originally two settlements founded by Swiss emigrants, which were later consolidated at a distance mid-way between the two, presumably during the Black Hawk War in Utah. The city has hence been called Midway. Sited on the western edge of the Heber Valley, Midway allows easy access to the Deer Creek Reservoir, and is at the eastern end of Provo Canyon, with access to Sundance Resort, Mt. Timpanogos Wilderness, Timpanogos Cave, Bridal Veil Falls, and the cities of Orem and Provo.
Midway hosts a wealth of attractions. A yearly festival, Swiss Days, is held on Labor Day weekend, with local artisans as well as those from far-flung communities sharing their wares. Historically, Midway provided hot springs resorts, including The Homestead, a resort founded in the 1880s that is still running strong today. The Homestead’s golf course is well known in the area, as is Utah’s only year-round, warm water SCUBA diving training site – a remnant of the numerous warm springs that abounded it the area.
Midway was also the venue for the Cross Country ski events of the 2002 Winter Games. Sited on Soldier Hollow State Park land, the area remains a favorite for cross country skiing and tubing in the winter, and mountain biking and golf on two championship golf courses in the summer. In September, visitors and locals alike flock to the Soldier Hollow Classic International Sheepherding Championship and Country Festival. This relatively new event has become a world class event with participants and spectators from all over the world.
Also in nearby Heber City, visitors will find the Historic Heber Valley Railroad, better known as The Heber Creeper. This scenic train takes riders across the Heber Valley and follows the Provo River down the picturesque Provo Canyon. In July of each year, Heber Valley Pow-Wow provides a unique opportunity to view a range of traditional dance styles and regalia, as well as to hear storytellers, and see Native American arts and crafts. And each November, the nationally acclaimed Heber City Cowboy Poetry Gathering and Buckaroo Fair takes place drawing folks from far and wide.
