By the mid 1800's Mormon pioneers had arrived in Salt Lake City and as they explored Big Cottonwood Canyon found thick forests and streams that made it ideal for saw mills. By 1858 three mills were operating and produced more than a million board feet of lumber to construct homes and buildings in Salt Lake and to shore up the mines that produced gold, silver and lead in nearby mountains. Located midway between several of those mines, the area became a stopping off point with an eatery, a store, and finally a hotel. The area currently boasts two Mountain Resorts, Brighton and Solitude, a few small businesses, and a number of residences, both seasonal and full-time.
